Gorges, gorges, waterfalls – wild waters in Lower Austria

“Experience Austria” on Sunday, July 14, 2024, 4:30 p.m., ORF 2

St. Pölten (OTS) There are also large numbers of “wild water” in Lower Austria. Gorges, gorges, waterfalls. The “Austrian Experience” from the ORF regional studio of Lower Austria (design: Karina Fibich, camera: Helmut Muttenthaler) shows some selected, particularly worth seeing examples in a repeat from October 2022. Both the geology and flora and fauna of the regions are an issue. Where does the Höllental between Rax and Schneeberg in southern Lower Austria get its name? Why is the water of the Erlaufschlucht in the Mostviertel so green? What was the Toreckklamm in the Ötscher-Tormäuer Nature Park once used for? The team led by designer Karina Fibich investigated these and other questions.

There are many stories surrounding the gorges and gorges, which often seem so mystical. Of course, the devil always plays a role, as with the Devil’s Bedstone in Hössgang in the Strudengau near Grein on the Danube. And hikers are said to have found shelter in caves like the Lohnbachfall near Rappottenstein in the Waldviertel. Signs of Celtic cult sites can be found, for example, on the Druidweg near the Ysperklamm in the southern Waldviertel and in the Falkenschlucht near Türnitz in the Mostviertel. Spectacular pictures of the highest waterfall in Lower Austria, the Trefflingfall in the Ötscher-Tormäuer Nature Park, as well as a view of the Ötschergräben and the Stierwaschboden show power plant there, which has been in operation since 1911, round off the picture of the wild waters of Lower Austria.

Sporting activities on the wild waters of Lower Austria are also possible: The documentary accompanies a group on a canyoning tour on the Rotmoosbach near Göstling an der Ybbs, where the audience learns interesting facts about this outdoor sport in harmony with nature. People who are familiar with the gorges and gorges and know their history and stories have their say, as does a biologist about the flora and fauna in gorges and gorges and a geologist about the structure and diversity of the rocks in the different gorges and gorges. The documentary from the Lower Austria regional studio provides facts and legends, interesting facts and mystique about the wild waters in Lower Austria.
