Global generosity at record levels – Indonesia is the most generous country in the world, according to the World Giving Index 2024, Kenya fol

According to that World Giving Index 2024 der Charities Aid Foundation Last month, a record 4.3 billion people worldwide helped someone they didn’t know, donating time or money to a good cause.

For the seventh year in a row, the most generous country in the world is Indonesia, where 90% of Indonesians donated money to charity and 65% volunteered their time. Kenya is in second place after being third last year. Singapore rose 19 places to third place, increasing its overall index score from 49% to 61% year-on-year. The positive results for Singapore follow the government’s recent initiatives to promote philanthropy and volunteerism.

The CAF World Giving Index is one of the largest fundraising surveys ever conducted, surveying millions of people around the world since 2009. This year’s index includes data from 142 countries, with people asked three questions: have they helped a stranger, donated money or volunteered for a good cause in the past month.

The CAF World Giving Index 2024 also shows:

· The top 10 includes only two of the world’s largest economies (Indonesia and the United States), while one of the world’s poorest countries – Gambia – is in fourth place.

· Morocco recorded the world’s largest year-on-year increase in donations. The interviews took place after the devastating earthquakes that struck the center of the country in September 2023. In 2022, only two percent of people donated money to charity, up from 18 percent last year, and the number of volunteers doubled from 8 to 16 percent.

· Greece is the biggest riser this year and has steadily improved its ranking since 2013. The value of helping strangers is particularly high – well above the European average and particularly high among young people.
