The Global AI Summit (GAIN) in Riyadh ended on a high note after hosting more than 30,000 delegates from around the world for three days. The live stream of the summit, organized by the Saudi Data and AI Authority (SDAIA), was viewed 3.7 million times.
Building on the success of previous editions, GAIN 2024 hosted more than 450 speakers from 100 countries who took part in 150 sessions. In addition, there were more than 25 launches and announcements and the signing of more than 80 agreements and memoranda of understanding (MoUs).
The summit has grown exponentially since its inception in 2020. Its growing importance reflects the role of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in promoting AI capabilities, positioning itself as a world leader in the field.
The key takeaway from the summit was that governments and policymakers must take global action to ensure that AI technology advances for the benefit of humanity. An ethical framework and solid governance are crucial for responsible development.
To support the advancement of AI ethics and governance, SDAIA, in collaboration with the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), announced the Riyadh Charter on Artificial Intelligence for Islamic Intelligence world. This promotes ethical AI based on Islamic values and principles, as well as sustainable development through international collaboration.
SDAIA has played a critical role in forming key collaborations to strengthen local and regional AI solutions and has signed MoUs with Microsoft Arabia to develop Arabic language models, with IBM for a center of excellence for generative AI technologies, and with NVIDIA to scale AI infrastructure signed throughout the kingdom.
The summit also marked several important milestones. In addition to the presentation of ALLaM, the world’s most advanced Arabic language model, other initiatives such as the Global AI Community, the THAKAI Platform and guidelines for dealing with deepfake technology were presented.
In addition, underscored the establishment of the Generative AI Center of Excellence by the Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO) and the agreement to establish an International Center for AI Research and Ethics (ICAIRE) as a UNESCO Category 2 Center open, the effect of GAIN 2024.
The summit itself provided a platform for companies from around the world to showcase the latest AI technologies and innovations, including AI-generated avatars, AI-generated artwork, and even robot bar staff serving drinks.
The summit concluded with an inspiring speech by the Director of the National Information Center of Saudi Arabia, His Excellency Dr. Esam Alwagait, thanking the participants:
“Her open perspective not only inspired us with the vision of what lies ahead, but also grounded us in the reality we must face. We not only imagined the future of AI together, but also made it a reality by addressing the challenges and identifying the conditions needed to truly unlock its potential.”
He added:
“It has been incredibly inspiring to see the world come together here in Riyadh, united by the impulse to make AI usable for everyone. The commitment to collective action was clearly evident throughout the summit.”
The success of GAIN 2024 ensures that the Kingdom’s AI infrastructure is significantly strengthened and has cemented Saudi Arabia’s position at the center of global AI.
