“Future Now! 40 Years of Diagonal”: live on Ö1 and in the ORF RadioKulturhaus

Vienna (OTS) The Ö1 series “Diagonal” is celebrating its 40th birthday with numerous guests – on Saturday, May 25th from 5:05 p.m. live on air and in the ORF RadioKulturhaus. And to mark the anniversary, the first “Diagonal” broadcast will be available to listen to again on Ö1 on May 26th from 10:05 p.m.

In May 1984, a two-hour program was established on Ö1’s Saturday afternoon program. A radio features section that would gradually slightly change the color and identity of the station. The title “Diagonal” was quite programmatic: Diagonal was supposed to take them through all areas of knowledge, subject options and musical styles and create innovative connecting lines. “Diagonal” is not looking back on its 40th birthday – the focus of the Ö1 live broadcast from the large broadcasting hall on May 25th is on the now. The topics of the performances, live music and discussion summits will be as obvious and diverse as the guests: AI and alternative truths, sustainability and nutrition, new artistic positions, applied human rights and dominant culture and disruptive processes. Guests on the show include the musician and artist Leonie Schlager, the performance and installation artist Barbara Ungepflacht, the author and filmmaker Iris Blauensteiner, the philosopher, curator and art critic Klaus Speidel, the art historian and curator Renée Gadsden, the author and dairyman Bodo Hell, the sustainability expert and co-founder of “unverschwenten” Andreas Diesenreiter, the publicist Ingrid Greisenegger from City Farm Augarten and the musicians Café Mondo, Christl, Ruhullah “Rui” Aziz and Yigit Bakkalbasi and Cemgil Demirtas aka Zack Zack Zack.

Diagonal turns 40! A rehearsal with the founding fathers

The first edition of the Ö1 series “Diagonal” went on air on May 19, 1984: A repeat of the groundbreaking debut can be heard on Ö1 on Sunday, May 26th from 10:05 p.m. The first issue of “Diagonal”, Ö1’s feature-length weekend supplement, was broadcast 40 years ago, invented and designed by Wolfgang Kos and Michael Schrott, together with like-minded “contemporaries”. Although the theme of the 40th birthday party at the ORF RadioKulturhaus is quite unsentimental “Future Now!”: The anniversary should not pass without a nostalgic look back. And so there is a re-hearing with the “Diagonal” founding fathers: In the first “Diagonal” issue, the contributions are dedicated to topics as diverse as “Walking in the Desert” and “The Ideology of the Cozy Big City”, and you can also hear a Portrait of the composer and performance artist Robert Ashley. Before that there is a special edition of “Diagonals Fine Music Salon”. Presented is the band whose song “Would We Be Alive” became the basis for the first “Diagonal” theme: The Residents.

The event “Future Now! 40 Years of Diagonal” will take place on Saturday, May 25th at the ORF RadioKulturhaus and is also available as a video live stream http://radiokulturhaus.orf.at to see.
