Fully slatted floor protest: 5 m giant pig “Grunzi” in Villach and Klagenfurt

The population is waiting with increasing impatience for the ÖVP’s decision to finally ensure a real end to fully slatted floors with mandatory straw bedding

Klagenfurt (OTS) – The last chance to correct the provisions banning fully slatted floors in pig farming, which were criticized by the Constitutional Court in the Animal Protection Act, would be the Council of Ministers on June 12th, so that the reform would go through the committee on June 16th and through Parliament on July 7th. There is now just 1 month left to establish mandatory straw bedding within a reasonable transition period. But so far the ÖVP, which is blocking such a decision, has not reacted at all.

That’s why the 5 m tall giant pig “Grunzi” is visiting Villach at Nikolaiplatz today and Klagenfurt at Heiligengeistplatz tomorrow. At these events, passers-by are informed about the immeasurable suffering of animals on fully slatted floors. 92% of people want straw for all farm animals, especially pigs, although 90% of them in Austria have to survive without straw. The VGT calls on the ÖVP to finally listen to the majority opinion of the population and to end the suffering on full columns.

VGT chairman DDr. Martin Balluch says: “The government is apparently divided about what the alternative to the current fully slatted floor should be. While Animal Welfare Minister Rauch from the Green Party clearly demands that pigs must be given straw, the ÖVP apparently wants to keep the fully slatted floor and just structure it a little. But a fully slatted floor is a fully slatted floor. We need a sustainable solution with straw here and now!“
