Anyone who currently demands a comeback of performance should first look who has long since done far more in Austria than he or she has to. “If you want more performance, we also have to pay for it. With the fact that 42 million unpaid overtime and overtime will finally be paid to the employees,” says Josef Muchitsch, Federal Chairman of the Group of Social Democratic trade unionists: Inside (FSG) in the ÖGB. Because the employees worked so many overtime and overtime in the previous year without having received a single cent for it from their employers.
Women are particularly affected by unpaid work. Almost every third overtime of women remains without payment or compensation. Almost every fourth overtime is unpaid in men. Last year, they missed over 2.3 billion euros in gross income. This money is not only lacking in people’s accounts, but also in the state budget. This is lost social security contributions and taxes – at a time when there is a lack of money for care, education and health everywhere.
“Part -time employees need more support and no longer pressure”
Austria has one of the highest part -time quotas in Europe. Over 50 percent of women work part -time. But not because they absolutely want that, but because they often have no choice. There are still sufficient childcare offers. And many jobs – for example in retail or in the care sector – are only offered part -time.
“It does not bring anything if we talk about part -time employment. Many fight with less money, with lower pension claims and worse social security. Part -time employees need more support and no longer pressure,” Muchitsch concludes.
