From east to west: STRABAG will be the largest motorway renovator in Austria in 2023

Vienna (OTS)

  • 30 km of highway renovated in 2023
  • Asphalt recycling and digitalization in focus
  • Roadway renovations and noise protection improvements with a total contract value of around €78 million.

On behalf of ASFINAG, STRABAG renovated sections with a total distance of approx. 30 km in 2023 – the main services were road renovation and noise protection construction. From east to west, STRABAG optimized the motorway infrastructure on the Vienna outer ring motorway (S1) between Vösendorf and Schwechat, the southern motorway (A2) in three sections, the western motorway (A1) at the Steinhäusl junction towards Salzburg and the Inntal motorway (A12) between Wörgl West and customer In 2024, the opposing lanes on the S1 and A1 will be renovated. The total order volume for these projects is around €78 million.

Soil and asphalt recycling in focus

In the projects implemented, STRABAG and ASFINAG attached great importance to working in a way that conserves resources. In the course of the renovation work, a total of around 45,000 tonnes of demolished asphalt were reused. Although asphalt recycling is already a common practice, the full potential of the technology is still far from being exploited in Austria. ASFINAG and STRABAG achieved a recycling rate of 40% on the A1 around the Steinhäusl junction. This is significantly more than is usually advertised. Around 20,000 tonnes of recycled asphalt have been used in this project alone, which not only saved CO2 but also costs. The asphalt was delivered from the STRABAG Hausleiten asphalt mixing plant.

We are very pleased that, together with ASFINAG, we were able to show that recycled asphalt meets the quality criteria required by busy highways. This project will definitely play a pioneering role for the rest of the road network in Austria“, says Klemens Haselsteiner, STRABAG CEO.

As a mobility partner, ASFINAG is increasingly setting important accents in terms of sustainability, especially in the construction sector. A high recycling rate, building materials with a low carbon footprint and innovative ideas are the keys to this. The construction sector consumes a lot of resources and generates a large part of Austria’s waste. This makes it all the more important for us to consider the recycling of materials and raw materials when planning projects“, says ASFINAG board member Hartwig Hufnagl. For years, ASFINAG has been exceeding the EU-required recycling rate for excavated material and concrete and asphalt demolition.

Where possible, soil was also recycled – for example on the A12, where 8,500 m3 of excavated soil was processed and reused on site. This also made it possible to significantly reduce truck journeys, their emissions and the impact on residents.

The disposal of residual materials and damaged soil was carried out by rail and saved over 30,000 truck kilometers in just one project.

Digitalization brings efficiency gains

Working efficiently, keeping traffic flowing as smoothly as possible and handling construction sites quickly is the main priority when renovating motorways. By using GPS-tracked asphalt deliveries, digitalized progress measurement and model-based measurement, machine downtime was prevented and preparatory work was carried out using digital tools regardless of the weather.

About the projects:

Vienna Outer Ring Expressway (S1):
On an 11.8 km long stretch from Vösendorf to Schwechat, the road was renovated and a noise-reducing road surface was asphalted. The oncoming lane will be implemented in spring 2024.

Western motorway (A1):
At the Steinhäusl junction, approximately 8 km of the roadway was renovated. A special feature was the introduction of an asphalt mixture that consists of 40% recycled material. The oncoming lane will be renovated from spring 2024.

Südautobahn (A2):
Renovations were carried out here in three projects in Mooskirchen, Bad Waltersdorf to Riegersdorf including the Bad Blumau wild crossing and the Lafnitztal / Oberwart junction and Pinkafeld. Here too, recycled asphalt and digital tools, including 3D models and scans, were used.

Inntal motorway (A12):
Between Wörgl West and Kundl, around 1.5 km of the road surface was repaired in both directions, over 2 km of noise barriers were built and the road was widened. Here, particular emphasis was placed on soil preparation.
