Bouygues Telecom, Free, Orange and SFR provide two network APIs to help online businesses combat fraud and digital identity theft

As part of the global GSMA Open Gateway-InitiativeFrance’s four leading mobile operators – Bouygues Telecom, Free, Orange and SFR – announced today that they will join forces to offer services to help app developers and companies combat online fraud and protect the digital identities of mobile customers and protect customers.

The operators are introducing KYC Match and SIM Swap, two application programmable interfaces (APIs) for the French market, according to the new CAMARAstandard that aims to unify the specifications of all mobile operators. France is the first country in the world where all four major operators are introducing the KYC Match API, which allows online businesses to verify the identity of new customers. Some of the operators also provide number verification to the developer community.

Since the Covid pandemic, France has seen a 37% increase in online transactions. In 2023, the total volume of transactions amounted to 2.35 billion euros, with 77% of these transactions taking place via mobile devices. The APIs have been developed and launched on the French market with a number of financial institutions such as BforBank (the online branch of Credit Agricole) or Fortuneo (subsidiary of Credit Mutuel Arkéa), which use KYC Match to verify new customers in collaboration with DQE Software , thoroughly tested. More than twenty companies in France already use Telco APIs to prevent account takeover fraud and verify customer identities during transactions and the onboarding process.

By bringing together operators from around the world, the GSMA Open Gateway initiative makes it easier to develop digital products that work seamlessly on all devices, regardless of country or operator. Since its launch, 67 mobile network groups, representing a total of 278 networks and three quarters of the world’s mobile connections, as well as 26 sales partners have joined the initiative.
