The mobility training program of the Vienna mobility agency supports educators in this: with exciting teaching materials and courses. The urban offer is available to all Viennese elementary school educators free of charge. The children are taught the topic of road traffic with the aspects of safety, health and climate protection. Schools are also particularly popular with the offer of free cycling courses for folk school children. The courses start after Easter.
“If tomorrow’s adults like to travel environmentally friendly today, this is an effective contribution to climate protection. With our educational offers for the elementary schools – especially by practicing as part of the free cycling courses – children learn how to certainly discover the city by bike and on foot – and how much fun it can be! ”Emphasizes mobility councilor Ulli Sima. “I am particularly pleased that we have managed to secure the financing of this important offer through the city in the future.” Around 7,000 children take part in the bicycle courses every year. With its mobility education programs, the Vienna mobility agency reaches around 36,000 Viennese children aged three to thirteen years. The City of Vienna has created its own bicycle exercises to offer the children perfect exercise conditions.
Petra Jens from the Mobility Agency Vienna explains: “With our mobility education program, educators get free teaching materials at hand who convey the topic of active mobility in accordance with age and practically. If you book a “bicycle box”, for example, you can also complete a free cycling course and thus combine the theory with practice. “
Cycling dates from April to October
With free cycling courses, the mobility agency supports children of the 3rd and 4th grade elementary school while learning to cycle. The range of free courses in the city of Vienna is well received and is therefore continued this year.
The free cycling courses for elementary schools are financed in the federal capital by the city of Vienna – Transport Organization and Technical Transport Affairs and the Mobility Agency Wien GmbH. The courses, on behalf of the City of Vienna, are carried out and organized by tested cycling trainers of the cycling schools “Fahrkreldrad”, “Shoulderblick – the Radfahrschule” and “Easydrivers”.

20 km per year: City relies on massive expansion of safe cycling infrastructure
The central approach to make cycling in the city safer for everyone is the massive expansion of the cycle paths, in the previous year the city of Vienna has invested over 52 million euros. The expansion continues intensively at the moment, for example, the 2nd section of the bike connection on Hütteldorferstrasse via Meiselstraße, the construction of the bike connection from the belt to the Danube Canal in Alserbachstrasse, in the outer Mariahilferstrasse will be busy working on the structurally separate two -way cycle path, it should be ready by summer. The construction program for 2025 will be presented shortly, the aim of the city is to build around 20 km of new cycle path infrastructure a year. “In recent years we have put a lot of pedals and have already overfilled our self -made goals, but we don’t give up, because it is still important to close essential gaps and make cycling even safer for everyone,” said Sima.
Workshops and Grätzl-Rallyes for all districts on foot
Certainly come to school on foot? The school path box for children in the 1st grade elementary school supports. In addition to the teaching material, workshops are offered in which the smallest playfully explore the street space as traffic detective.
The Grätzl-Box, in turn, makes you curious to discover the further school environment and train the self-employed. The Grätl-Rallyes popular with children and families with tricky puzzles for the 23 Vienna districts will be expanded this year!
“It was particularly important to us that as many children as possible in Vienna find fun discovering their Grätzl on foot. Therefore, the Grätzl-Rallyes are now available in two versions, a linguistically simple version for ‘explorers’ and a more demanding version for ‘experts’, ”said Petra Jens. Leselilli – actively on the go in the kindergartens
Since February, Leselilli – a book dragon with 25 picture book bags – has been on the road with exciting stories about the topics of active and sustainable mobility in kindergartens. There is a lot to discover with the picture books and to laugh and discuss a lot when looking together. The Leselilli is a cooperation between the association “Baobab – Learning opens worlds” and the Vienna mobility agency.
