Frauenring raises the alarm on the International Day of Non-Violence: Lack of victim protection in family law | Association of Feminist Single Parents

The protection against violence in family law, criticized by the Council of Europe, has devastating effects for single parents. The Feminist Single Parents Association -FEM.A reports an emergency in telephone consultations due to the frequent post-separation violence.

On the occasion of the International Day of Non-Violence on October 2, 2024, the Austrian Women’s Ring and the Feminist Single Parents Association – FEM.A present the worrying situation of mothers affected by violence. On the one hand, they experience financial violence: poverty among single parents has increased by 28% in the last year. At the same time, the lack of protection against violence in family law, which is also criticized in the GREVIO evaluation report, is having increasingly serious effects. Klaudia Frieben from the Austrian Women’s Ring criticizes: “Over the last five years, the government has neglected to anchor the victim protection provided for in the Istanbul Convention in family law. Securing the maintenance of the children of single parents has also not been successful. The poverty of single parents is also at a record high, 41% live below the at-risk-of-poverty threshold!”

In its annual report, the FEM.A association points out the rapid increase in the need for advice: the association carried out 900 consultations in 2023, an increase of 13%. The demand has now almost doubled and the rush can hardly be managed anymore, says chairwoman Andrea Czak: “98% of single parents who turn to us for help are victims of violence. Unfortunately, we cannot currently meet the high demand for advice, so we urgently ask for further support.” Violence protection expert Maria Rösslhumer says: “The Istanbul Convention must urgently be anchored in family law so that children and women do not remain trapped in violence after separation.”

This is how the FEM.A 2023 association helped:

  • 900 consultations and relief discussions on the FEM.A Helpline
  • Arranging over 300 free initial consultations with lawyers, psychologists, psychotherapists and coaches
  • 45 free webinars to empower single parents
  • Awareness work (advocacy, public relations) to raise awareness of the challenges faced by single parents in Austria

Speakers:

Klaudia Frieben, Chairwoman of the Austrian Women’s Ring
Andrea Czak, MA, executive chairwoman of the Association of Feminist Single Parents – FEM.A
Mag.a Maria Rösslhumer, violence protection expert

Media representatives are warmly welcome.
