“The black and red state governors must finally acknowledge that we have one federal army and not nine state armies!”
Vienna (OTS) – “The geographical distribution of the Federal Army helicopters must be a purely military question and not a political one.” With these words, the liberal defense spokesman and chairman of the parliamentary national defense committee NAbg commented today. In his contribution to the debate, Mag. Volker Reifenberger used the following wording in the justification for the application from NEOS and the government factions regarding “Evaluation of the stationing of helicopters in the federal territory”: “The distribution of the helicopter fleet should reflect the needs of the federal states…”
“Although the further justification somewhat weakens the alleged importance of the needs of the federal states, this formulation bothers me so much that we, the Freedom Party, will therefore vote against this motion. As members of the National Council, we should take a step back on this issue and leave it to the experts, the military, and not interfere with the armed forces,” demanded Reifenberger and continued: “For once, I have full confidence in the ÖVP Defense Minister that she has her experts “The general staff will achieve a militarily sensible distribution of the new army helicopters.”
“As MPs, let us rather limit ourselves to our core task, legislation, and set more important course in order to be able to make Austria ready for defense again. The needs of the federal states are not of interest. The state governors should have no influence or say in this matter. If the red-black state governors had their way, then the federal army would only be geared towards disaster control operations. Although this is a very important task, it is a secondary task of the Armed Forces and not its actual core task,” Reifenberger made clear.
The black and red state governors would prioritize pioneers, helicopters and military music. The state governors would have to take note that we have one federal army and not nine state armies. “The main task of our armed forces is national military defense and we have to prepare for that. This means that the Federal Army helicopters must be distributed in the way that is best from the perspective of national defense,” said the FPÖ defense spokesman.
