Austria secures class, promotion now possible
St. Pölten (OTS) – “I would like to warmly congratulate the Austrian national ice hockey team on securing their place in the league ahead of schedule. The comeback against the record world champion and reigning title holder Canada as well as the triumph in the last second against Olympic champion Finland will go down in our sports history,” said LH deputy and sports councilor Udo Landbauer, praising the ÖEHV cracks after the convincing 4-1 win against Norway.
Apart from the opening defeat against Denmark, Austria is certainly one of the positive surprises of the Ice Hockey World Cup in the Czech Republic. And before the last round – Austria meets Great Britain, which has so far had no points – it is now even possible to reach the quarter-finals.
“An incredibly strong performance. Maybe the dream will continue at this World Cup and it will go into extra time,” said Landbauer, with a view to the next match and possible quarter-final qualification.
“In any case, I’m already looking forward to next year’s tournament in ice hockey-loving Sweden and Denmark, although there will be two unpleasant opponents in Hungary and Slovenia. But we will be able to maintain our first class at the 2025 World Cup and move further forward in the world rankings,” Udo Landbauer is convinced.
