Christian Hafenecker met yesterday in Budapest with the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and external relationships, Péter Szijjártó, and Chancellor Minister Gergely Gulyás. Central political issues were discussed in a friendly atmosphere, including the current government negotiations in Austria, the future of the EU and the war in Ukraine.
In a subsequent joint press conference with Foreign Minister Szijjártó, Hafenecker commented on the ongoing coalition negotiations in Austria and confirmed the determination of the FPÖ to comply with their election promises. “There are central election promises of the FPÖ and they must be observed. We are not looking for a coalition with the other parties, but with our population and we do not reveal our goals either. Our course remains clear and we don’t let ourselves be dragged over. If necessary, we are waiting for new elections. Then the population, which has already made us the strongest strength, can further strengthen our position, ”said Hafenecker. He also emphasized the close cooperation with the Hungarian Fidesz Party and promised that Herbert Kickl, as the future Chancellor, would be a reliable partner in Hungary.
Hafenecker practiced sharp criticism of the ÖVP’s negotiating strategy. “After the successful turning away of the EU deficit procedure, which threatened our sovereignty, we recorded content discussions. It quickly became clear that the ÖVP does not lead to serious negotiations, but only operates tactical maneuvers. At the same time, there were obviously discussions with the SPÖ, ”criticized Hafenecker.
The FPÖ general secretary made it clear that the FPÖ is striving for a fair and respectful neighborhood policy. “The Hungarian government and its population must not be constantly being made contemptuous by European and Austrian politics. As neighbors, we should maintain a reasonable and constructive cooperation instead of intervening in the interior policy of the other country, ”says Hafenecker.
He praised Hungary for clearly showing grievances within the EU in recent years. “There are considerable undesirable developments in particular in the migration question and the EU position on the war in Ukraine. The danger that our economy will take significant damage through the current EU’s current decisions is real. Like the FPÖ, the Fidesz party is committed to a rapid peace solution in Ukraine, ”emphasized Hafenecker.
