“It is significant that means such as destruction of posters and intimidation are used in a democratic election campaign. Such acts are not only disrespectful and vile, but a direct attack on freedom of expression and fair political competition,” said LAbg. and FPÖ St. Pölten District Chairman Martin Antauer, clearly condemning the recent events surrounding the wanton destruction of his party’s election posters throughout Lower Austria.
Also affected is the FPÖ top candidate from Herzogenburg (St. Pölten-Land district), Sascha Pospischil, whose posters are repeatedly damaged and defaced. However, Martin Antauer also sees the cowardly attacks as confirmation: “The destruction of our posters shows that our messages are effective. “We are obviously on the right track with our policies and our presence – and that seems to be a thorn in the side of some.”
In this context, the FPÖ also criticizes the lack of a clear stance taken by other parties. “The question arises as to whether the ÖVP and SPÖ tacitly accept or even approve of these acts. We, on the other hand, call on all political competitors to speak out unequivocally in favor of a fair and objective election campaign,” continued Antauer.
In any case, the FPÖ Herzogenburg will not be discouraged by such incidents. “We stand by the citizens, listen to them and represent their concerns vigorously. Attempts at intimidation or acts of destruction will not stop us from being there for our compatriots,” explains Martin Antauer.
Finally, Martin Antauer appeals to the common sense and sense of responsibility of everyone involved: “Politics must not be a space for destruction and hatred. It’s about the future of our homeland.”
