Ford Pro is celebrating the world premiere of the new Ford Ranger PHEV at the IAA Transportation 2024 in Hanover. The latest version of the European pick-up bestseller – available in Austria in the XLT and Wildtrak equipment lines – with its plug-in hybrid drive enables locally emission-free driving without compromising on towing capacity, payload and off-road performance. With the new launch, Ford Pro strengthens its position as the leading pick-up brand in Europe and expands the comprehensive range of its battery-electric and electrified models.
- With the Ranger plug-in hybrid, Ford Pro electrifies Europe’s best-selling pick-up model series without compromising on towing capacity, payload and off-road properties
- Completely newly developed drive unit delivers 205 kW (279 hp) and offers a new best torque value for the Ranger model series of 690 Nm
- Plug-in hybrid system allows a purely electric range of up to 50 kilometers; the drive battery can be fully charged in less than four hours
- Production will start at the beginning of 2025, prices will be communicated this year
With a maximum torque of 690 Newton meters, the plug-in hybrid model (Plug-in Electric Vehicle, PHEV) achieves a new record for Ranger series vehicles. Business owners and leisure adventurers benefit from increased off-road capabilities and expanded use as a towing vehicle thanks to the electrified drive train. The plug-in hybrid system also enables purely electric driving with a target range of up to 50 kilometers.
With the Ranger PHEV, the Ford Pro Power Onboard system finds its way into the series. This means that up to 6.9 kilowatts of electricity from the traction battery can be used for electrical devices without having to rely on a loud and bulky power generator.
“The all-new Ranger PHEV seamlessly combines the benefits of electrification with the robust performance that has secured our bestselling pick-up a loyal fan base in Europe,” explains Hans Schep, Managing Director of Ford Pro Europe. “Our first pick-up model with plug-in hybrid technology can serve as an extremely powerful companion for work and off-road use as well as a premium vehicle that combines first-class comfort and modern connectivity for families with the option of purely electric driving.”
With the market launch of the Ranger PHEV, Ford Pro is once again taking a pioneering role in the segment. The new model is being developed together with the other drive variants for the European market in Silverton, South Africa. The first deliveries to customers are scheduled for summer 2025. Together with the tried-and-tested diesel versions, the pick-up series reveals a versatile offering for a wide range of requirements.
Plug-in technology for the pick-up segment
The completely newly developed plug-in hybrid drive combines a 2.3 liter Ford EcoBoost turbo petrol engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission with a 75 kW electric motor and a traction battery with 11.8 kWh net capacity. The maximum torque of 690 Nm represents a new record for Ford Ranger series models. With 205 kW (279 hp), the PHEV version has higher performance than the Ranger with the 3.0 liter V6 turbodiesel (177 kW/240 PS).
The modular hybrid transmission of the Ford Ranger PHEV is a new development. It integrates the electric motor into the gearbox housing and in this way reduces the complexity of the drive train. Compared to a conventional drive with a pure combustion engine, the hybrid system delivers additional power and torque at low speeds via the electric motor. The battery provides an all-electric range of up to 50 kilometers and can be fully charged in under four hours using a single-phase 16-amp charger.
The Ranger PHEV impresses with the same uncompromising performance as the conventional model variants with diesel and petrol engines, which countless fans around the world have always appreciated. Customers of the new Ranger with plug-in hybrid technology will still be able to enjoy a payload of up to one tonne and a permissible trailer load of up to 3,500 kilograms. You also benefit from its extensive off-road capabilities, which benefit from the latest generation of the e-4WD all-wheel drive system, the transfer case with reduction and the locking differential on the rear axle. Ford Pro has placed the traction battery in specially designed frame rails. This means they do not restrict ground clearance or ramp angles.
The Ranger PHEV’s electric motor enables purely electric locomotion without local exhaust emissions. Four different driving modes decide when and how the energy from the traction battery is used:
- Auto EV offers the best combination of performance and efficiency
- EV Now enables purely electric driving with a range of up to 50 kilometers
- EV Later preserves a minimum amount of electrical energy for later use
- EV Charge prioritizes charging the traction battery while driving
The other advantages of the electrified drive include regenerative braking (recuperation) and the maximum torque that is available immediately when driving off from a standstill. This has a particularly positive effect when carrying a higher load, when towing a trailer or when driving on demanding off-road sections. Given the modified chassis and drive-specific weight distribution of the Ranger PHEV, Ford engineers have chosen a more comfortable setup for the rear suspension. The measures also improve feedback when driving both on and off paved roads.
The new home charging solution Ford Pro Home Charging allows you to plan charging sessions at times of day when cheaper electricity tariffs apply. According to Ford calculations, the Ranger’s plug-in hybrid system also offers advantages in terms of fuel consumption compared to the V6 diesel engine with a larger displacement.
The Pro Power onboard technology of the Ranger PHEV is suitable for both commercial and leisure-oriented customers. It can supply power to several electrical devices at the same time – be it on the construction site or at the holiday camp. The system offers an output of 2.3 kW as standard. A new version with 6.9 kW and two additional 16-ampere connections at 3.45 A for more powerful tools in the loading area is optionally available.
As with all Ford Pro models, the Ranger PHEV is backed by a comprehensive range of service and charging options as well as intuitive software and flexible financing options. They simplify vehicle use, increase productivity and reduce operating costs. As small or medium-sized business owners, many Ranger customers use their pickup truck for work during the week and for leisure activities on the weekend. The FordPass Smartphone-App For example, it supports you with information on vehicle status and safety warnings in real time. Companies with larger vehicle fleets and their own fleet manager can use the data from Ford Pro Telematics to optimize the efficiency and operating times of your company cars. The new digital logbook from Ford Pro Software It also makes it easier to keep track of the kilometers driven and thus simplifies accounting and compliance with legal regulations.
