For the first time in Europe: Simpsons Cartoon Art from the William Heeter and Kristi Correa collection

Exhibition in the Krems Caricature Museum on the occasion of 35 years of “The Simpsons”

Krems (OTS) In 2024, the cult TV series “The Simpsons” will celebrate its 35th anniversary. Taking advantage of the anniversary, the Krems Caricature Museum is showing over 150 hand-painted cels, storyboards and production films from the first thirteen seasons of “The Simpsons”. On Saturday, July 13th The exhibition opens with the title “Here comes Bart! Simpsons Cartoon Art from the William Heeter and Kristi Correa Collection”.

William Heeter and Kristi Correa’s private collection of The Simpsons remained closed to the public for a long time. It is a sensation that we are showing Simpsons cartoon art from this remarkable collection for the first time outside the USA. The Krems Caricature Museum is thus taking on a pioneering role in Europesaid Gottfried Gusenbauer, artistic director of the Krems Caricature Museum.

Over 150 hand-painted cels

In its exhibition, the Krems Caricature Museum focuses on the art and process of cel animation with over 150 hand-painted cels. This traditional method of production is one of the oldest forms of animation. Sketches and drawings are drawn by hand on transparent celluloid films, known as cels, and placed over a painted background. The technique is related to reverse glass painting.

Generations have grown up with cartoons drawn by hand. With our exhibition, we offer art lovers and animation fans alike an insight into a world that once illuminated television screens and can now be admired as cultural heritage in the Krems Caricature Museumexplains Anna Steinmair, curator of the Krems Caricature Museum.

“The Simpsons” is known for its dark humor and its merciless look at Western society. In the exhibition you meet Bart, who is clearing his stomach for a tattoo during a trip to Tijuana. A picture of Marge – still without the noticeable beehive hairstyle – and the brown-haired Homer takes the viewer back to the young love of the series couple. The presented couch gags from the opening sequences of the series guarantee further laughs. During the tour, visitors also meet the power plant operator Mr. Burns, Bart’s best friend Milhouse, Krusty the Clown, or Itchy and Scratchy from the series of the same name in the animated series “The Simpsons”.

70th birthday of inventor Matt Groening

The inventor and mastermind of “The Simpsons” is Matt Groening, who will celebrate his 70th birthday in 2024. There are countless other creative people working behind the scenes. The cels, storyboards, and production slides presented from the William Heeter and Kristi Correa collection are from the first thirteen seasons before the series transitioned to digital production. Drawings from the “Simpsons” comics by creative director Bill Morrison complement the exhibition “Here Comes Bart!”

Zwentendorf nuclear power plant with “Simpsons” motifs

In the TV series, Homer works at a nuclear power plant. As a special highlight, motifs from the “Simpsons” will be exhibited at the Zwentendorf nuclear power plant in Lower Austria in cooperation with EVN. “Homer’s Radioactive Tour,” a guided tour of the nuclear power plant that was never put into operation, tells the story of the plant with a lot of humor and “Simpsons” power. In-depth on the exhibition

The Excursus “Drawn History” complements the show “Here comes Bart! Simpsons Cartoon Art from the William Heeter and Kristi Correa Collection”. Historical caricatures by Manfred Deix, IRONIMUS, Erich Sokol and Bruno Haberzettl in the Krems Caricature Museum address, among other things, the resistance against the Zwentendorf nuclear power plant in the 1970s.

“Full energy ahead!” is the title motto of the family special in Austria’s only museum for satirical art. Experimental stations, including a walk-in installation by Flora & Martin Szurcsik-Nimmervoll, and award-winning illustrations allow young and old alike to immerse themselves in the exciting world of energy.
