On June 13 and 14, 2025, a sporty and cultural novelty will take place in Vienna: for the first time, Austria and Hungary compete against each other in an international match in the schnapps. Six of the best players of both countries duel in 36 single games. The first nation at 19 wins the duel around the new Schnappsen Nations Cup hiking cup.
The players were specifically nominated by tournament organizers and associations. In Austria they come from the active online and tournament scene, in Hungary the national team was put together by the official Hungarian schnapps, the Magyar Snapszer Szövetség. The participants – between the ages of 20 and over the age of 70 – not only bring exceptional skills with them, but also life stories, such as they shape the game: including a math teacher, a carpenter, a former football referee, an electrical installer, an innkeeper and a retired postal officer.
The game is played in three stages: on Friday afternoon, Saturday morning and Saturday afternoon. The entire tournament will be on schnopsn.com as well as transferred to YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Tikok – and thus brings the social element of the game from the dining room to the digital age.
Schnapsen – known in Hungary as Snapszer – is deeply rooted in both countries. It connects generations as well as social classes, brings players from a wide variety of living environments to a table and lives from exactly that mixture of tactics, pace and abuse, which makes it so special. In taverns, family festivals or at the price snaps in the village club – Schnapsen is lived culture.
A film team accompanies the international match and holds interviews, personal stories, emotional ups and downs, winners and losers – the material creates a documentary that preserves this premiere for posterity, makes the cultural meaning of the game visible and perhaps inspires the next generation of schnapps.
However, it should not stay with a country duel: a multi-nation tournament is already being planned. Because Schnapsen is not only played in Austria and Hungary – also in Slovenia, Croatia, Romania, Bavaria and South Slovakia, the game is known and popular. A look at the countries of origin of many active players shows that Schnapsen is still a cultural heritage of the historic Habsburg empire.
The event is not open to the public. However, media representatives are cordially invited to attend the tournament on site.
