First Austrian heating report: Majority are planning to switch, but there are large information gaps regarding subsidies

ProPellets started Information campaign

Vienna (OTS) Upheaval in the heating market: More than half of homeowners want to replace their oil and gas heating systems. But: One in three people don’t know anything about the 75 percent funding. Every second homeowner is dissatisfied with the information about the subsidies. proPellets is therefore launching an Austria-wide information campaign with a funding calculator at the center.

The first Austrian heating report, which was carried out by the opinion research institute TQS on behalf of proPellets Austria, paints a clear picture: “In Austria there is a high willingness to exchange oil and gas heating systems. More than half of homeowners are specifically thinking about switching to a new heating system. One in five people willing to change wants to change their heating system in the next two years,” says Managing Director Christian Rakos from proPellets Austria. “Seven out of 10 intend to do this in the next five years.”

Cost savings during ongoing operations are the main motive

The report shows that Austrians attach particular importance to economic aspects when replacing heating systems. 96 percent of those willing to switch cite cost savings as the main reason for the exchange. Specifically, 66 percent are dissatisfied with the costs of their existing heating system. Two out of five say they spend more than 2,000 euros a year on heating.

For every second person, contributing to climate protection is also an important reason for switching. The fuel supply and the concern about the unavailability of fossil fuels are an important argument for one in three people willing to change.

Need for information about funding

Although there has been one since January 1, 2024 75 percent funding is offered for switching from oil and gas heating to climate-friendly alternatives such as pellet heating, one in three respondents do not yet know about this option. This shows a high need for information and education among the population. “50 percent of those surveyed would explicitly like more information about funding in order to find the best option for them. This is a clear mandate for us as industry representatives to take action. Austria urgently needs more transparent information about heating replacement,” said Rakos.

Pellet heating as the most popular alternative

When choosing a new heating system, there is a clear preference: 60 percent of those willing to change prefer one Pellet heating. This popularity can be attributed to the numerous advantages of pellet heating, such as:

  • Low maintenance: Pellet heating systems are characterized by their low maintenance requirements.
  • Climate neutrality: Pellets are a CO2-neutral fuel made from domestic raw materials.
  • Low operating costs: Pellet heating systems are significantly cheaper to operate compared to oil and gas heating systems.
  • Comfort and coziness: Pellet heating systems offer a high level of living comfort and cozy warmth.
  • Quick installation without modification: A new pellet heating system can be installed in two days.

Young people in particular find pellet heating attractive. This is due, among other things, to the future-oriented and sustainable orientation of this technologyRakos says happily.

Information offensive started: Yes! Now pellets

In order to cover the identified need for information and promote the energy transition in heating, proPellets Austria is launching the campaign “Yes! Now pellets”. At the center is one web-based funding calculator, which provides information about funding in a specific individual case with just a few clicks. In addition, the campaign offers comprehensive information about pellet heating and the associated advantages.

“The first Austrian heating report clearly shows that Austrians are ready to switch their heating systems to climate-friendly alternatives,” said Rakos. “The new heating replacement subsidies are having an impact on those who have already heard about the subsidies. Four out of five can imagine taking advantage of these subsidies to replace the heating system. With our campaign we want to inform and support people so that the energy transition in heating is a success.”

In addition to the subsidies, information is also provided about the quick installation and low maintenance requirements of pellet heating systems. This is important to nine out of ten people wanting to change. The speed and simplicity of switching to pellets are often not yet known. “Four out of five people who want to change do not have much knowledge about the topic. A circumstance that will improve through the information campaign,” Rakos is convinced.
