First aid for the soul: emergency pastoral care for relatives in the event of accidents and suicides | Archdiocese of Vienna

Vienna (OTS) A stroke of fate can quickly tear the ground from under your feet; in just a few moments, lives can be wiped out and others can be changed forever and irretrievably. After accidents, emergency pastors look after uninjured passers-by, witnesses, relatives and emergency services. It is important that there is someone on site who can act as a contact person to recognize and respond to the needs of people in a state of emergency.

Emergency pastoral care is requested by emergency services organizations. The volunteers are ready to respond spontaneously to calls from the rescue service or the police, to drive to the scene of the accident or home to those affected and to initially provide them with relief and orientation. The missions to relieve relatives immediately after a suicide in the family are particularly challenging.

“It’s nice that someone was there now and listened to me – that I didn’t have to be alone with all of this.” This sentence from a relative after an emergency pastoral care intervention sums up what it’s all about: first aid for the soul.

The Catholic and Protestant churches work together in Austrian emergency pastoral care. The majority of the work is done on a voluntary basis.
