The high security standard for the users of Finanzonline will be further developed from October 1, 2025: From then on, the login will only be possible with a 2-factor authentication. The Ministry of Finance enables and recommends the use of ID Austria to users. This not only brings more security, but also more comfort, since the ID Austria can also be used for numerous other applications.
Finance Minister Gunter Mayr: “Finanzonline is an international model for financial administrations around the world. In order for us to stay at the top, we are constantly developing the platform and are now increasing the security standard. The best key to login at Finanzonline is the ID Austria. However, if you want to use 2-factor authentication now, you can use this from now on. I would like to thank the employees of the Ministry of Finance who have built up the FinanzOnline so successfully and are committed to developing. ”
The financial administration has always been relating to high security standards for the protection of sensitive data. The 2-factor authentication (2FA) is therefore mandatory for all users-also for companies. The access data is then entered in the login and the identity of the user is also checked with a second confirmation step. In this way, the security level for personal data in connection with tax matters in Finanzonline is further increased.
ID Austria as a preferred solution
From February 2025, Finanzonline is reminiscent of its users to voluntarily register for the admission variant, which is mandatory and even more securely from autumn. The Ministry of Finance’s experts recommend the ID Austria. It is and remains the safest and easiest way to get started with the financial byline and also already meets all requirements for a secure 2-factor authentication. Anyone who uses the ID Austria does not require additional registration in Finanzonline. In addition, the ID Austria can also be used for many other applications of authorities or the economy.
Alternative 2-factor authentication for finance online
For everyone who cannot use ID Austria, there is an alternative 2-factor authentication. From February 2025, this can be set up directly in Finanzonline. This requires a smartphone with an authenticator app (e.g. Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator). Solutions are also available for desktop PCs or laptops.
When entering Finanzonline, a note on 2-factor authentication is displayed. Then the step-by-step instructions for registration take place. If a device is lost or changed, the 2-factor authentication can be reactivated with a recovery code.
