Film – Berlinale: cell phones and scissors unpacked!

This year, the filmmaker, who is also known to many through its numerous music videos for Björk or Radiohead up to Paul McCartney, enriches the Generation Kplus section with a wonderful stop-motion levy to his daughter: »Maya, give me a title ? ”. His poetic-amusing film radiates an infectious do-it-yourself charm, so that you would like to get started immediately to make your own stop motion film with your cell phone.

And at the beginning of his film, Gondry also tells how it works: When he discovered a function on his smartphone that could “transform life into a cartoon”, his creative spirit was immediately awakened. Since he often works far away from home, he encouraged his daughter Maya to send him titles for a bedtime story. Papa then encouraged her, Mama read her and Maya looked at her.

She got her first little animated film for her third birthday. Gondry figures from Maya’s everyday life integrated from the start: the grandmother, baptized by Maya Boum Boum, the grandpa (pampas), her cat and also her mother. When Maya got bigger, Gondry got the corresponding equipment to take separate photos and bring them together with twelve frames per second.

One of these first films he made is about an earthquake. In order to integrate his daughter into the publication of her private project, she each presents the films that are already suitable for five -year -old. Maya is the heroine of all stories, including in this adventure in which she goes out in an earthquake to take pictures. Her mother, who thinks this is too dangerous, she calms down with the words: “But we’re made of paper.”

Many other films followed, through a crazy plane, how Maya takes a bath and accidentally shrinked by her mother, Maya as a sesson woman or how Mama goes on an adventurous journey, where the way is obviously the goal.

However – oh hurt! – After six years, Maya didn’t want any more films, which Papa Gondry naturally processed pseudotheatrically in another film. This winking humor, paired with Gondry’s exuberant imagination, make the one -hour film a gem for young and old.

The highlight of Gondry’s handmade animated films is the deliciously absurd story of “Maya, the policewoman and the three cats”. You can hardly imagine a more beautiful declaration of love to the cinema, but also to the creativity that slumbers in each of us. So, cell phones and scissors unpacked!
