The customer wishes for the development of electric cars are clearly defined: lower weight with higher efficiency and increased range with shorter charging times and maximum safety. FEV, the innovation driver for the mobility and energy sector, and ProLogium, a global pioneer in the development of advanced vehicle batteries, fulfill exactly these wishes with their new development.
This is made possible by LLCB technology (Large-Footprint Lithium Ceramic Battery). With an anode made of 100 percent silicon, it offers a 10 times higher capacity density compared to the graphite anodes previously used. Depending on the vehicle segment and intended use, the LLCB allows weight savings of up to 300 kg or a maximum range of 1,000 km. In contrast to the currently common liquid electrolytes, the solid electrolyte used is not flammable and increases safety against thermal runaway. Potential short circuits caused by escaping electrolyte fluid in the event of a leak are also prevented.
“With the LLCB solution, we have successfully combined ProLogium’s know-how in the area of cell development with our development, system and testing competencies,” says Dr. Thomas Hülshorst, Global Vice President Electric Powertrain at FEV. “Our collaboration on battery packs and concept designs focuses not only on regulatory standards, but also on market requirements. We even exceed these.”
At the same time, the silicon anode enables the ultra-fast charging process, with which the battery can be charged from five to 60 percent within five minutes. This means the user can cover a distance of an average of 300 km. After another three minutes, the battery is 80 percent charged, increasing the range by an additional 100 km. In this way, the LLCB helps to shorten charging times and bring them closer to the duration of a refueling process for vehicles with combustion engines.
FEV and ProLogium will continue to develop the LLCB together in the future, as the two companies announced at the Paris Motor Show 2024.
