International Democracy Day is celebrated on September 15th. This day was decided by the United Nations in 2007 to honor and celebrate democracy. “I consider the passing on of democratic ideas from generation to generation to be an essential element in maintaining and securing our democracy. This is particularly important in times of upheaval and change,” says Federal Council President Franz Ebner. “The climate crisis, COVID-19 and Russia’s war of aggression have unsettled citizens. The increasing polarization of our society and the radicalization of the political camps are a great danger to our democracy. Our goal must now be to approach each other and work towards it together “But we will not achieve this by constantly accusing each other of endangering democracy during the election campaign,” said Ebner. Rather, we must “look for something that unites us and meet in the common middle,” appeals the President of the Federal Council.
Study “Democracy needs a future – building bridges, strengthening democracy”
The motto of his Upper Austrian chairmanship of the regional chamber “Democracy needs the future. The future needs origins” stands for an intensive examination of the future of democracy. On November 12th, the Federal Council will address the challenges to democracy posed by extremism, crises and disillusionment with politics in a study on the topic “Democracy needs a future – building bridges, strengthening democracy” and about fake news, social media and the role of public law Discuss media. The study also covers the EU Action Plan for Democracy, teaching democracy in kindergartens and schools, as well as reducing bureaucracy and citizen participation projects. The keynote speech on the topic “Challenges of democracy for governments and citizens – A look into the future” will be given by German futurologist Daniel Dettling. (End) red
