Federal Army: Largest simulation exercise of the Federal Army in 2023 at the Military Academy

Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner visited exercise participants

Wiener Neustadt (OTS) Today, Thursday, November 30, 2023, Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner visited the Army’s largest simulation exercise this year, “Joint Action 2023,” in Wiener Neustadt. This exercise is designed to train leaders for new challenges on the battlefield. Conventional combat is practiced by large formations of land forces.

“During the two-week exercise, the soldiers will be intensively prepared for the diverse and complex challenges of the future, which in the worst case could even include a military threat. Thanks to their innovative and contemporary training at the Theresian Military Academy and other military units in recent months, the exercise participants now have the opportunity to apply the knowledge they have acquired in practice. The simulation training technology offers a practical representation and processing of operational scenarios. Our soldiers have excellent knowledge of how to deal with crisis situations. Preparation for a wide range of operations is crucial to ensure the protection of the Austrian population,” said Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner.

The exercise project “Joint Action 2023” is carried out by the National Defense Academy. This is the largest simulation exercise in the current calendar year with 220 exercise participants. The exercise serves to apply the acquired knowledge to combat in conventional combat and ultimately to military national defense. The core of military operations is combined arms combat, which serves to bring together different types of weapons in different types of operations. This topic is implemented using a training brigade, which consists of managers at various levels, from the general staff course to those in the military academy.

The exercise is divided into two phases: The first phase is operational planning for an attack by an armored infantry brigade against a fictitious opponent in the Mostviertel – Tullner Feld area. The second phase is used to simulate the planned operation against the enemy group using the Theresian Military Academy’s command simulator.

The command simulator depicts the battle virtually, giving a brigade and its battalions the opportunity to implement plans and make decisions in battle based on a realistic course of events. No troops or large military equipment (e.g. tanks, aircraft, etc.) are required for this. These are represented using tactical operators in the simulator.
