Power outages should be prevented by overflight
Vienna (OTS) – Following a request from the Styrian State Warning Center, forces from the Austrian Armed Forces from Aigen im Ennstal and Hörsching have been on assistance duty again since Sunday, December 3rd, 2023 at 1:38 p.m. to deal with the masses of snow in Upper Styria.
An AB212 helicopter is used in the Liezen, Aigen, Paltental, Hohentauern and Murtal areas. Downwash is intended to remove snow from power lines that have been strained to their limits. Downwash is a flight maneuver in which, by flying very low, the downdrafts generated by the rotor clear the vegetation of precipitation.
“Here, as the Federal Army, we are once again demonstrating our permanent readiness for action. Not only the avalanche rescue teams, but also our helicopters are on standby at short notice to help where others can no longer. “Especially in view of the current events, we are pleased to be able to modernize our helicopter fleet or supplement it with the new Leonardo AW169, which is currently in production,” said Defense Minister Tanner about the assistance mission that has been triggered.
Due to the location, the operational services at the FIALA FERNBRUGG air base in Aigen im Ennstal were also put into service to support the operation through refueling and air traffic control. Another AB212 has been alerted for any further requirements and will be available from 2:45 p.m.
