Faster delivery of goods with barrier-free tolls in the United Arab Emirates

Wien/Ras al Khaimah (OTS)

  • One million transactions per year
  • End-to-end toll technology from Kapsch TrafficCom

Kapsch TrafficCom has successfully installed a truck toll system in the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah (part of the United Arab Emirates).

The barrier-free system replaces the previous toll station-based solution. This allows trucks to use the motorway network without having to wait at toll booths, allowing for better traffic flow and faster freight transport. The system is currently operated by the emirate’s Public Services Department, whose toll staff have been trained by Kapsch TrafficCom.

Carolin Treichl, EVP EMENA at Kapsch TrafficCom, comments on the project: “We are pleased that the collaboration with the Public Services Department is working so well. This is a very important and long-term partnership for us.”

The toll system consists of a series of toll bridges, the corresponding sensors, cameras and other hardware elements for identifying and charging tolls for trucks without forcing them to stop or slow down. The system also interfaces with many of the ministry’s other transportation systems, as well as a mobile app that allows drivers to individually and easily manage their trips and payments, and a web portal for toll payments.

Fakhar Munir, General Manager UAE at Kapsch TrafficCom, comments: “Ras Al Khaimah enables greater transport efficiency, smoother traffic flow and improved logistics with the improved tolling solution for trucks. This is a groundbreaking step by the authorities to improve the region’s connectivity.“

The system is particularly notable for its ability to withstand the region’s extreme weather conditions, where temperatures of over 40 degrees Celsius and severe sandstorms are commonplace. Despite these difficult circumstances, the system works reliably and currently processes around one million transactions per year.
