Fact-checking with teenagers: dpa is expanding its network in European countries – participants between the ages of 14 and 19 are wanted

Hamburg (OTS) –

Whether it’s nutritional tips, the US election campaign or Taylor Swift: teenagers have long been getting a lot of information via Tiktok, YouTube and other social networks. But there is not only entertainment and news there, but also deliberately spread misinformation. In the Teen Fact-Checking Network (TFCN), young people check claims themselves and share their knowledge with their peers in videos. The dpa is now expanding the network, which has been successful for years, with partners in Europe.

The TFCN Europe is supported for 18 months by the European Media Innovation Fund (EMIF). The concept: In workshops, young people learn tools and tricks for debunking disinformation. With the support of dpa journalists, they then independently produce fact-checking videos for social media based on claims they have chosen. The focus is on topics that concern young people in their everyday lives.

The application phase for interested young people between the ages of 14 and 19 ends on October 20, 2024. Who can apply, how it works and how to apply can be found here: https://www.dpa.com/de/faktencheck-teens

The project partners in Spain (Verificat), Bulgaria (Factcheck.bg/Teach for Bulgaria), Austria (BAIT/Digitaler Kompass), Finland (Faktabaari) and Portugal (Poligrafo) as well as the dpa will also produce suitable teaching materials for the teens’ videos. so that they can be used in media literacy lessons.

The network was set up in the USA in 2019 by MediaWise, an initiative of the US journalism school Poynter Institute.

“Since we became part of the Teen Fact-Checking Network, we want to expand it in Europe and get more countries on board,” said Teresa Dapp, head of the fact-checking editorial team at dpa. “I’m very happy that we can now implement this. The commitment of many teens is impressive.”
