Experts call for school-based occupational therapy across the board | Occupational therapy Austria

On “International Day of Education”, Ergotherapie Austria emphasizes the contribution of occupational therapists to an equitable education system

Vienna (OTS) On the occasion of International Day of Education on January 24th. Marion Hackl, President of Ergotherapie Austria, points out and emphasizes the essential importance of school for children and young people “Difficulties with typical school activities can affect every student and affect self-esteem and self-image. Occupational therapists can provide support here!”

School-based occupational therapy

School-based occupational therapy takes place directly in everyday school life, with the focus of occupational therapy being on the students’ ability to act. “It is particularly important to us as occupational therapists to emphasize how essential it is for us to work in partnership with teachers and that it is about joint teamwork for the well-being of the students.”, emphasizes Stefanie Holt, self-employed occupational therapist and member of the professional association’s project team for the rollout of school-based occupational therapy. Occupational therapy does not focus on school learning content or didactics per se, but on the entire day-to-day school life: from arriving in the morning through the various teaching elements to the organization of breaks. – The interventions should ensure that as many students as possible can take part in the lessons and follow the content, organize their learning materials or adequately meet their personal needs. It’s about what students should do, what is expected of them and what they would like to be able to do. Educators should experience relief in everyday school life through collaborative collaboration.

The right to education

In addition to the right to health, the right to education is also an undisputed child right. So that all children and young people can participate in everyday school life and have limited access to education, occupational therapists must also be included in mainstream schools as part of the school team. “School-based occupational therapy makes an essential contribution to healthy, equitable growing up and to the greatest possible participation of all children and young people in everyday school life and supports the achievement of educational goals.” Marion Hackl emphasizes the relevance of the demand.

Occupational therapy

Occupational therapy is a legally regulated health profession and deals with meaningful activities in everyday life. This means everything that we all do – do – all day long wantalso must or what is expected of us. It’s about activities from all areas of life that are important to us, make up our everyday lives and give our lives meaning. The connection between meaningful activities, health and well-being is the focus of occupational therapy.
