Vienna/Lower Austria (ots) –

Together with various partners, the tourism organization Tourism Ireland calls out the second “Ireland Week” in Austria.

On March 17th, the Irish national holiday of St. Patrick’s Day will be celebrated worldwide. The more than 2,000 Irishes living in Austria are also celebrating. The Irish flair and attitude to life is not only conveyed on this one day: from March 9th to March 22nd there are events that celebrate Irish culture.

A variety of events such as dance and music performances offer an insight into the traditions, customs and peculiarities of the green island.

On ORF 2, Silvia Schneider will experience a journey to the most beautiful places in Ireland on March 9th in her show “Silvia discovered”. On March 15th, Ireland fans and the Irish Community of Vienna meet at Freyung: The colorful St. Patrick’s Day Parade starts there at 12 p.m. Immediately afterwards, an Ireland stage invites you to many music and dance performances around the Irish Pub “The Long Hall” in Florianigasse. A children’s program is also offered there.

Austria has a long Irish tradition. Between the years 745 and 784 the high -taught Irish missionary Virgil and 1155 Irish monks founded the Schottenstift in Vienna. Ireland is a small country, but offers plenty of culture and history. There are therefore more than 80,000 Austrians every year: the island inside. I am therefore very much looking forward to the upcoming Ireland week and hope that many visitors will celebrate”, Says Simon Bopp, responsible for Tourism Ireland in Austria.

Ireland, the “Land of Saints and Tarried”, named his most important holiday after the man who brought Christianity to the island in the 5th century. The day that is considered the day of death of St. Patrick is March 17th. In Dublin, the first St. Patrick’s Day was officially celebrated on March 17, 1996 with a large -scale parade and thus raised the existing celebrations to a new level. As early as the following year, he was enthusiastic about the St. Patrick’s festival, which became a lavish festival of four days in Dublin. It is one of the largest worldwide festivals and reaches over 700 million people per year. And Saint Patrick is also honored in Belfast, Cork, Galway and Armagh – with parades, festive events, services and of course in the pubs.

If you are looking for the religious roots of the highest Irish holiday, you have to travel to Northern Ireland and the traces of the saint on the St. Patrick’s Trail consequences. 30 sights on a 148 -kilometer sightseeing route show the importance of the first missionary for the Christianization of Ireland. By Armagh City, the church center of the Green Island, through Newry to Downpatrick, where the grave of the national saint is located, travelers are led to the historical sites with notices.
