The typical East German garages are the focus of one of the main projects in the cultural capital year. Curator Agnieszka Kubicka-Dzieduszycka and her team have developed an extensive participation format and have been invited since 2023: Interior to get to know Chemnitz garage users: to get to know their stories into art formats and thus make the city tangible from a garage perspective.

In order to pursue the original French meaning of the word garage, “bring something to safety”, director, musician and performance artist Tanja Krone has asked countless garage owners in recent months: inside (and many other Chemnitzer: inside) how they find their internal security in uncertain times. From this is the music theater Songs of (In)Security arose that is premiered at the Garagen Festival from June 6th to June 8th. With her performances, Tanja Krone often stays close to reality and uses the poetry of the documentary as a textual basis. For her real series with real speeches and the concert performance with real singing, she has already returned to Chemnitz to look for connections between the present and the past with former classmates: interior, teachers: interior and friends of back then in their turning stories.

The approximately 30,000 Chemnitz garages, which were largely built by their users during GDR times in Community and own work: inside, are the starting point for the #3000 garages. They were and are not only parking spaces, but also the retreat and creative laboratories. In 2025, this project visible the people who are connected to these places. Even if the garage doors for the city’s cultural capital: remain closed on the inside, the artistic works that were created with the garage users: the inside of the cultural importance of these places so typical for Eastern European cities.

The work created in this way is collected and documented in this way in the continuously growing #3000 garage exhibitionwhich can be seen in the rooms of the garage campus until November 29, 2025, a former tram depot for Chemnitz 2025. This exhibition is the result of the team around the team led by curator Agnieszka Kubicka-Dzieduszycka and is currently showing the large photo exhibition, among other things General meetingfor which the Berlin photographer Maria Sturm 164 garage users: portrayed inside, as well as teaser and fragments of work that can be seen in Chemnitz.

Such as the interactive art installation Fishelantwhich the performance artist Cosima Terrasse developed together with a group of screwdrivers: inside. Behind it is a machine that can make gold out of shit, because the artist heard that you have this ability in Chemnitz in many research talks.
