“Experience Austria” from the Carinthian regional studio, “Hiking paradise Saualm – nature and culture at every turn”

The latest “Austrian Experience” from the Carinthian State Studio, “Hiking Paradise Saualm – Nature and Culture at Every Step”, is dedicated to Saualm, which is known for its gentle alpine pastures, rustic forests and untouched nature. The documentary can be seen on ORF 2 on Sunday, August 18th from 4:30 p.m.

The Saualm is one of the most beautiful and largely natural areas in southeast Austria. The gentle mountain ridge stretches in a north-south direction from the Klippitztörl to the Drau and offers more than 100 kilometers of marked hiking trails, rustic alpine huts and an incredible view over Carinthia. The landscape is gentle, without steep slopes, you hike along the mountain ridge at 2,000 meters above sea level, experience the varied flora and fauna, many managed alpine huts and can enjoy the untouched nature away from mass tourism. But the people who live and work here are also special. Under challenging conditions, they maintain the unique cultural landscape and maintain the alpine pastures.
“Experience Austria” visits a keeper who looks after over 100 head of cattle on the peaks every morning, is a guest of hut owners and their guests who enjoy nature here, goes with hikers to the impressive rock formations, and talks to the mountain farmers about their hard work Life and shows the typical fortified churches of the region as well as the first organic hotel in Austria.

And there are also many creative people who live here – a gallery owner who presents art in an old cowshed, a sculptor who transforms the mountain’s minerals into very special water sculptures, and a jazz musician for whom the Saualm is home, inspiration and retreat is. But even in winter the Saualm is a paradise for nature enthusiasts. High above the fog line, there are countless opportunities for skiers, tourers and snowshoe hikers to experience a natural form of winter sport.
A film about a beautiful, natural landscape, largely unknown gems and interesting people who appreciate and live the cultures of the area with a lot of idealism.
