The exhibition year 2024 – from the birth of radio to climate change
Vienna (OTS) – The house’s line of examining technologically and socially relevant topics and examining them from a wide variety of perspectives is also reflected in the upcoming exhibitions at the Vienna Technical Museum: With the opening of the new permanent climate exhibition in March, visitors will have a comprehensive overview of today’s most pressing problems. In addition to the special exhibition “Energy Transition”, which can be seen until the end of 2024, the museum is dedicating a permanent exhibition area to the topic of climate change for the first time. The multifaceted presentation shows the complexity of the current situation and makes it tangible using practical examples and a multimedia experience room.
From April 2024, the Vienna Technical Museum, in cooperation with the Austrian National Bank, will be holding a special exhibition on the topic of cash and the sometimes controversial dematerialization of the monetary system and the associated changes in society.
The special exhibition, which opens in autumn 2024 and is being created in cooperation with the ORF, shows that the past is always a part of the present: “100 Years of Radio” takes visitors on a varied journey through a century of radio history in Austria. From the birth of the medium, which initially required technical skills from its users, this exhibition traces the development of radio and its social role up to the present day. As an interactive element, a recording studio provides exciting experiences. As part of “100 Years of Radio”, the Austrian Media Library of the Vienna Technical Museum will illuminate various aspects of Austrian radio history in an accompanying online exhibition.
Museum for all generations
With its thematic focus on innovations and future technologies, the Vienna Technical Museum was able to score points with both adults and young people in 2023. The positioning as a family museum was also further expanded, which meant that the number of guests in the family group increased again: With the reopening of the “minTi” in autumn 2023, a separate experience area was dedicated to the youngest museum visitors, which children aged 1.5 and over will be enthusiastic about technical and physical principles conveyed.
The aim of passing on a fascination with technology to different generations is also demonstrated by the tailor-made educational formats for young people such as the techLAB or the roadLAB, which tours throughout Austria. Young people acquire knowledge of 3D printing or laser cutters and thus acquire creative and digital skills, in keeping with the mission of the Vienna Technical Museum as an educational institution.
A record year for the Vienna Technical Museum
In its 106 years of existence, the Vienna Technical Museum has never welcomed as many visitors as it did in 2023: last year, more than half a million people embarked on an exciting and educational journey through the history of technology that does not end in the present, but rather also dares to look into the future. With highly topical topics and exhibitions on the energy transition, artificial intelligence and virology, as well as numerous educational formats, we managed to once again increase the visitor record of 2022. The 500,000th visitor was welcomed by the management of the Vienna Technical Museum on December 21, 2023 and surprised with a voucher for the Annual Pass+, which promises the lucky winner and a companion many more exciting experiences in the museum.

Large international conference in autumn 2024
The global CIMUSET conference as part of the international museum organization ICOM will take place for the first time in the Vienna Technical Museum in autumn 2024. At this congress of experts from technology and science museums from all over the world, important impulses for cooperation between museums and collections in the field of science and technology are expected.
