Vienna (OTS) – The recent electoral successes of right-wing populists in the Netherlands and Slovakia should not obscure the significance of the impending change of power in Poland. The liberal-conservative opposition alliance clearly defeated the ruling nationalist and right-wing conservative PiS in the parliamentary elections in October. Even if PiS-loyal President Andrzej Duda delays the transfer of power to opposition leader Donald Tusk, this will significantly increase the effectiveness of the European Union. Poland as a frontline state on Ukraine’s side in the fight against the Russian aggressor will also make it easier for the EU Commission to act more decisively against resistance from Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
Prof. Paul Lendvai will discuss the domestic political consequences of the change of power in Poland and the international effects on Sunday, December 3, 2023, at 11:05 a.m. on ORF 2 in the “Europastudio”:
