Eurodance: Gigi D’Agostino: Hard and slow

Gigi D’Agostino didn’t want any of this. Not the dentist’s sons and daughters with cashmere sweaters over their shoulders and Aperol Spritz glasses in their hands, who bawled “Foreigners out!” to his dance hit “L’Amours toujours” on Sylt at Pentecost, and not them either High school graduates in Carinthia, the riflemen in Lower Saxony or the beer tent visitors in Saxony who enthusiastically followed suit. Since the scandalous video from a nightclub in Kampen was published online in the middle of last week, the catchy tune has spread like wildfire among the right-wing. “My song is about love,” said D’Agostino when asked by “Spiegel” on Saturday, thus countering the shameful appropriation of his work.

The fact that “L’Amours Tojours” is currently at number 1 on the iTunes charts could have triggered a sense of déjà vu in the 56-year-old Italian DJ and music producer: the song was already in 2001, after D’Agostino took it from his album of the same name released as a single, became a worldwide hit – and has been a long-running hit ever since. However, D’Agostino had already made a name for himself before, among other things, as the inventor of Lento Violento (which also includes “L’Amours Tojours”): a musical style that is similar to hardcore techno, but is comparatively very reduced Tempo is characterized. Slow (lento) and yet brutal (violento), the whole thing with dreamy melodies – for D’Agostino, as he announced at the time, this was not just a musical genre, but a lifestyle. Even though he has been battling a serious illness in recent years, he seems to have remained true to this to this day: in 2020, for example, he released “Hollywood,” another successful dance hit based on a tried and tested pattern; Live performances are planned for this year and next year. You don’t wish him any uninvited guests.
