EU must show clear edge in data protection
Vienna (OTS) –

On today’s European data protection day, the Greens emphasize the immense importance of data protection for democracy and citizens: interior rights. “When the European data protection convention was signed on January 28, 1981, the digital world as we know it today was not even imaginable. In 2025, tech giants use our data as a business model and authoritarian states roll out comprehensive surveillance. In view of this, data protection is more important than ever, ”explains Süleyman Zorba, digitization spokesman for the Greens.

With the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the EU has set a global standard. But the reality shows that tech giants continue to collect mass data and make your business model. “These platforms offer their services supposedly ‘free’ – but we all pay with our personal data,” warns Zorba. “If this data is then misused to spread targeted disinformation and fuel right -wing extremist ideologies, data protection becomes a question of democratic self -defense.”

Zorba therefore demands a clear attitude of the EU: “The EU must not buckle against these tech oligarches. Stricter controls, stricter punishments for data protection violations and an end to mass surveillance by private corporations are needed. ”The Greens are committed to a digital future in which human rights are on profit interests.

“This day should remind us that data protection is not a luxury – but the basis of a free and democratic society,” says Zorba.
