Lenzing – The Lenzing Group, a leading global manufacturer of regenerated cellulose fibers for the textile and nonwovens industries, has updated its climate targets to align its commitment to combat climate change with the goals of the Paris Agreement to limit man-made global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), the most respected organization in the field of climate-related target setting, has reviewed and confirmed this target improvement. This makes Lenzing the only producer of regenerated cellulose fibers with a scientifically confirmed net zero target. By 2030, Lenzing wants to reduce its direct emissions from the production of its fiber and pulp plants (Scope 1) and its emissions from purchased energy (Scope 2) by 42 percent as well as its indirect emissions along the value chain (Scope 3) on the way to net zero. by 25 percent, starting from 2021. This corresponds to an absolute reduction of 1,100,000 tons (instead of the previously targeted 700,000 tons).(1)^(1) “In Lenzing we aim to positively impact the textile and nonwovens industries to change. In this way, we are continuously increasing resilience against external influences such as the energy crisis and, on the other hand, can better meet increasing customer demand for ecologically responsible products.” Christian Skilich, Chief Pulp Officer and Chief Technology Officer of the Lenzing Group: “With our reduction targets, we are making a decisive contribution to comply with the 1.5 degree limit, which must be the benchmark for our entrepreneurial thinking and actions. We will continue to invest in energy savings and new technological developments and are therefore confident that we are on the right track to achieve our net zero target by 2050.” The following targets were recognized and confirmed by SBTi: 1. Overall Net zero target: Lenzing AG is committed to achieving zero net greenhouse gas emissions along the entire value chain by 2050. 2. Short-term goals: Lenzing AG is committed to reducing absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 42 percent by 2030 compared to the base year 2021(2) . Lenzing AG also commits to reducing absolute Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions from purchased goods and services, fuels and energy-related activities, as well as upstream transport and distribution by 25 percent within the same period. 3. Long-term goals: Lenzing AG is committed to reducing absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 90 percent by 2050 compared to the base year 2021^*. Lenzing AG is also committed to reducing absolute Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 90 percent over the same period. The updated climate targets replace the climate target from 2019, which was also approved by the SBTi. Lenzing is taking far-reaching and sustainable measures to achieve these ambitious goals. An example of this is the significant investment in the conversion and modernization of the existing production sites in Asia. In China and Indonesia, Lenzing obtains grid electricity from 100 percent renewable sources and is pushing the conversion of these systems to green energy. Lenzing is also investing in energy independence and reducing greenhouse gases at its Austrian locations. In order to supply the Burgenland lyocell plant with renewable energy, Lenzing acquired a biomass power plant in 2023. With the supply contract for the purchase of around 13 megawatts of power from wind energy, Lenzing is making a long-term investment in a price-stable and diversified power supply for the Upper Austrian location.
