EQS News: Lenzing AG / Keyword(s): Sustainability Lenzing combines sustainable glacier protection and circular economy in textiles with an innovative concept March 21, 2024 / 2:35 p.m. CET/CEST The issuer/publisher is responsible for the content of the announcement. ═════════════════════════════════════════ ═════════ ════════════════════════ Lenzing combines sustainable glacier protection and circular economy in textiles with an innovative concept • Geotextiles made from biodegradable LENZING™ fibers to protect glaciers avoid pollution Microplastics • Network of partners aims to recycle geotextiles at the end of their life cycle to give them a second life as clothing Lenzing – The Lenzing Group, a leading provider of regenerated cellulose for the textile and nonwovens industries, has created a unique, innovative concept , which contributes to the sustainable protection of our glaciers and at the same time inspires collective action towards sustainable practices and a circular economy in the textile and nonwovens industry. The presentation took place as part of the celebrations for the International Day of Forests, at the Palais des Nations, the United Nations Office in Geneva. The melting of glaciers is being severely negatively affected by global warming. Geotextiles are used to protect ice and snow. However, the fleeces used for this purpose consist of petroleum-based fibers, through which microplastics(1)^(1)^ can enter the valley via streams and enter the food chain through small organisms and animals. Nonwovens made from cellulosic LENZING™ fibers, which are biodegradable at the end of their life cycle and can be completely recycled, are the sustainable solution to this problem.(2)(2) This was discovered as part of a study by the University of Innsbruck and the Austrian glacier railway operator on the Stubaier Glacier in Tyrol (Austria) confirmed. During a field test on the Stubai Glacier, covering a small area with the new material made from LENZING™ fibers was tested for the first time. Four meters of ice mass was saved from melting. In 2023, the pilot project was successfully expanded to all Austrian glaciers used for tourism. “We are pleased with the positive results and see the project as a sustainable solution for glacier protection – not just in Austria, but beyond the country’s borders,” says Berndt Köll, Emerging Business Development at Lenzing. Last year, the project was also awarded first place in the renowned Swiss BIO TOP Awards for wood and material innovations. Commitment to the circular economy Lenzing takes this innovation project as an opportunity to create inspiration for joint action in the spirit of sustainable practices and a circular economy in the textile and nonwovens industry. Together with a network of committed and innovative partners, Lenzing is working on processing geotextiles into new textile fibers and giving them a second life as clothing. The use of geotextiles is usually limited to two years, after which the nonwovens are disposed of. In the first phase of the pilot project, the recycling of nonwovens for geotextiles was successfully tested and a fashionable “Glacier Jacket” was produced from the recovered fibers. In addition to Lenzing, the network includes Marchi & Fildi Spa, a specialist in the field of mechanical recycling, the denim manufacturer Candiani Denim and the avant-garde fashion studio Blue of a Kind. Florian Heubrandner, Executive Vice President Commercial Textiles at Lenzing: “This groundbreaking innovation project brings together trusted, like-minded companies and partners along the entire supply chain and shows the companies’ shared vision and commitment to the circular economy. The collaboration is a testament to the power of partnerships to drive innovation and sustainability, reduce environmental impact and promote collective action on climate change to increase global impact in the textile industry.” Krishna Manda, Vice President Corporate Sustainability at Lenzing: ” As climate change accelerates the melting of glaciers, we are at a critical juncture that requires transformative change for global impact. Nature stimulates our creativity and inspires us to come up with truly innovative ideas. As part of Lenzing’s ongoing commitment to combining innovation and sustainability, this groundbreaking project represents the balanced connection between technology and nature by showcasing collaborative, circular and sustainable practices while serving as a call to collective action. Together with our network of dedicated industry experts, we can make a significant positive impact on our planet and protect future generations. This project is an example of the possibilities we have when we work together.” The innovative concept, artistically staged by one of the most influential contemporary artists, the Italian maestro Michelangelo Pistoletto, was launched on March 21, 2024, as part of the Celebrations of the International Day of Forests, presented at the Palais des Nations, the headquarters of the United Nations Office in Geneva (UNOG).
