In contrast to conventional toll bridges made of steel or aluminum, which are associated with significant emissions due to their manufacturing and recycling processes, the Green Gantry developed by Kapsch TrafficCom is built from wood. This sustainable material not only offers the same functional possibilities as conventional toll bridges, but also significant environmental benefits: The Green Gantry in Carinthia stores 15 tons of CO(2), while comparable steel bridges cause up to 30 tons of CO(2) during production. Michael Weber, Head of Sales EMENA at Kapsch TrafficCom, explains: “Our Green Gantry not only has a positive CO(2) balance, but is also just as stable and more environmentally friendly than a conventional toll bridge. In addition, it meets all relevant European standards and Standards for toll bridges, is therefore just as safe to use, easy to maintain and can be dismantled and recycled after a service life of at least 20 years without any additional environmental impact.” “For us, sustainable building is not an empty slogan; we want to set new standards in this area,” say ASFINAG board members Hartwig Hufnagl and Herbert Kasser. “Innovations are the driving force behind this. Wood as a building material can also play an important role on the motorway in the future.” The load-bearing core and therefore the majority of the new toll bridge is made of laminated spruce timber. For the outer layer of this load-bearing core, more weather-resistant larch wood was used, which can be easily repaired in the event of damage. The HASSLACHER Group delivered the highly prefabricated wooden structure to the construction site on the S 37. The assembly on the motorway was carried out by the traffic engineering company Forster under the guidance of Asfinag and was completed within one day due to the high level of prefabrication. The electricity for operating the toll bridge also comes from our own photovoltaic system. In order to have enough energy available even in bad weather and at night, a battery storage system was installed.
