With a total of 743 submissions from 54 countries, this year’s competition once again demonstrated the relevance and innovative potential of brick architecture worldwide. From a pre-selection of 50 nominees, the jury chose winning projects in five categories – “Feeling at home”, “Living together”, “Working together”, “Sharing public spaces” and “Building outside the box” – as well as an overall winner based on criteria such as aesthetics , sustainability and innovation. “Architects today face several major challenges at the same time. They must create spaces that reduce our impact on the planet and protect us from the consequences of climate change, but also make housing more affordable, because the cost of living has risen dramatically in recent years. To To find answers to these questions, outstanding architects are breaking new ground in the use of materials and structures, as this year’s Brick Award winners demonstrate. Aside from aesthetic and structural qualities, their projects express the spirit of innovation required to meet today’s challenges From the careful use of resources to building in existing buildings, these creative minds have found solutions that fully exploit the still huge potential of bricks. We are proud to honor and support these pioneers,” emphasizes Heimo Scheuch, CEO wienerberger. From living space to art installations: The winners demonstrate the potential of brick architecture. The prize is worth a total of €27,000, of which €7,000 goes to the overall winner and €5,000 each to the winners in the other four categories. The main prize went to the British office Níall McLaughlin Architects for the project “International Rugby Experience”, an exhibition and events center in Limerick dedicated to the sport of rugby, submitted in the Brick Award category “Sharing public spaces”. The design of the project is inspired by Limerick’s famous churches, but still features a modern aesthetic, allowing the building to blend into its surroundings while aesthetically enhancing them. The winner in the “Feeling at home” category was Studio Equipo de Arquitectura from Paraguay, whose “Intermediate House” consists of compressed earth blocks that enable low-emission temperature control. The “Living together” award in the multi-family category went to the Argentinian team at Estudio Arqtipo for combining ten residential units on a narrow corner lot, with each unit having a private outdoor area. The two Irish architectural firms Grafton Architects and O’Mahony Pike Architects won in the “Working together” category with their collaboration on the new office building for the Electricity Supply Board of Ireland. They have managed to combine modern building standards with the historic aesthetics of Dublin. The prize for “Building outside the box” ultimately went to a joint project by the studios HANGHAR from Spain and PALMA from Mexico, which created a temporary, artistic brick construction called “Types” in a narrow passage in the Spanish city of Logroño for an architecture and design festival of Spaces”, which guides visitors through different architectural styles.
