The Greek company TERNA SA, the construction company of the GEKTERNA Group, commissioned the international technology group ANDRITZ with the delivery of the electromechanical equipment for the new Amfilochia pumped storage complex in central Greece. The project is the largest grid-connected energy storage investment in Greece, making it a milestone for the country’s energy transition. Once operational, the power plant will have a total installed capacity of 680 MW (generation) and 730 MW (pumping) and will generate approximately 816 GWh of clean and sustainable electrical energy per year. As a green battery, the modern pumped storage power plant will compensate for fluctuations in electricity generation from wind and solar power plants, thus ensuring the safe and stable operation of the Greek power grid. Given the increasing global energy demand and the growing share of volatile renewable energy sources, economical solutions for storing large amounts of energy are essential. Pumped storage power plants are the most efficient method of storing large amounts of energy over longer periods of time. They therefore play a key role in the energy transition.
