EQS-News: Andritz AG / Key word(s): Incoming orders ANDRITZ delivers world’s largest lignin production plant to Södra pulp mill in Sweden July 3, 2024 / 09:00 CET/CEST The issuer/publisher is responsible for the content of this announcement. ════════════════════════════════════════ ══════════ GRAZ, JULY 3, 2024. The Swedish forestry group Södra has commissioned the international technology group ANDRITZ to supply a complete solution for production of Kraft-Lignin at the Mönsterås pulp mill, Sweden. With this major investment, Södra is entering the lignin market and is continuing its strategy of maximizing the use of wood resources. This will be the first commercial kraft lignin plant in Sweden and the largest in the world. Kraft lignin is a byproduct of pulp production for paper. Today it is used in pulp mills to generate energy. As a renewable resource, it can also replace fossil raw materials in the chemical industry or form the basis for new biofuels. “This investment means a lot for Södra and for our kraft pulp mill in Mönsterås. This means we can make even better use of every tree and increase our profitability. It is a significant investment for Södra and for the green transition,” says Karin Dernegård, plant manager at Södra Cell Mönsterås. ANDRITZ will supply a system for recovering lignin from the black liquor produced during pulp production. This lignin will be available to Södra as a salable product. The scope of supply also includes systems that improve the environmental performance of the plant and support the full integration of lignin recovery into existing operations. The system will be based on ANDRITZ’s innovative LignaRec^TM lignin recovery process. Drying the lignin using flake drying technology ensures the highest product quality. The integration of the LignaRec process into the Mönsterås pulp mill is completed by the installation of a SulfoLoop^TM sulfuric acid plant from ANDRITZ. This system enables the sulfur cycle to be closed and avoids the discharge of sulfate streams even after the integration of lignin recovery. The lignin and sulfur recovery solutions are part of ANDRITZ’s CircleToZero initiative, which aims to make optimal use of side streams in pulp mills and thus lay the foundation for emissions- and waste-free production. With the new order, Södra is continuing its collaboration with ANDRITZ in the use of secondary streams. The company already operates an ANDRITZ Kraftanol^TM biomethanol plant at its factory in Mönsterås. The plant is the first in the world to convert pulp production byproducts into purified biomethanol. “We are very pleased that Södra is once again trusting in us to implement a completely new solution that both supports the green transition and opens up new business opportunities,” emphasizes Joachim Schönbeck, CEO of ANDRITZ. Södra’s lignin production plant is scheduled to start operations in 2027. The plant is made possible by the Swedish Energy Agency and The Industrial Leap initiative via NextGenerationEU. – End – DOWNLOAD PRESS RELEASE The press release is available for download at (1)andritz.com/news-de.
