In the first three quarters of the 2023|24 financial year, the fruit, starch and sugar group AGRANA reported earnings from operations (EBIT) of EUR 149.4 million. € (Q1-3 2022|23: €50.2 million *). Sales revenue amounted to €2,947.8 million (Q1-3 2022|23: €2,742.5 million). AGRANA CEO Stephan Büttner said: “In view of the continued volatile business environment, we are satisfied with the development of our financial year so far. We were able to improve our operational performance in almost all business areas. Although we see an increasingly challenging business environment from the fourth quarter of 2023|24 and the following months, we still expect a very significant increase in EBIT for the year as a whole.” Business development in the segments FRUIT segment Sales in the fruit segment were in the first three quarters at €1,178.9 million, 7.7% higher than the previous year. Sales of fruit preparations increased due to prices. Sales revenue in the fruit juice concentrates business unit remained stable. EBIT reached €50.1 million after nine months (Q1-3 2022|23: €–51.6 million). In Asia we are confronted with a massive deterioration in the market environment. As a result, a special depreciation affecting EBIT on assets in Asia amounting to around €16 million was recorded as of November 30, 2023. In the fruit juice concentrates business area, a significant increase in earnings was recorded compared to the already good period of the previous year. This was primarily due to improved contribution margins for apple juice concentrate from the 2022 harvest and for beverage raw materials. STARCH segment Sales in the starch segment amounted to €907.4 million in the first three quarters and were therefore moderately below the previous year’s figure. In the last nine months, a gradual normalization of market prices for starch products was observed due to falling energy and raw material prices. Ethanol sales fell significantly due to the sharp fall in Platts prices (around -27%). As a result, EBIT in the Starch segment was significantly below the previous year at €58.0 million. SUGAR segment Sales in the sugar segment increased by 30.6% year-on-year to €861.5 million in the first three quarters. Despite lower sales, this positive development was led to a very significant increase in sugar sales prices. The price development was very positive both in the retail business and in the industrial sector. EBIT amounted to €41.3 million, 19.0% better than the previous year. A moderate increase in consolidated sales is expected. The positive EBIT guidance is supported by solid operational performance in the first three quarters of the financial year. From the fourth quarter of 2023|24 and in the following months, AGRANA sees an increasingly challenging business environment. The AGRANA Group’s investment volume in the 2023|24 financial year is €140 million, which is significantly higher than both the 2022|23 value and the depreciation of around €120 million. Around 14% of investments will go to emissions reduction measures in our own production as part of AGRANA’s climate strategy.
