Vienna (OTS) –
- Efficient use of resources is essential for curbing climate change
Today, Chancellor Karl Nehammer and Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler presented the federal government’s measures for the housing and construction offensive. The environmental umbrella organization welcomes the focus on affordable housing, the investment of 220 million euros in the renovation of buildings and the vacancy levy. “The construction sector has a major influence on climate change: in Europe it is responsible for 50% of material consumption and 35% of waste. Globally, it accounts for 53% of greenhouse gases and 40% of global energy demand. In view of advancing climate change and from the perspective of the circular economy, we should therefore focus specifically on renovation in the future – which would also slow down soil sealing
“, says Franz MaierPresident of the environmental umbrella organization.
The construction sector is a key factor in the transition from a linear to a circular economy. If it is circular, it is more resource-efficient and contributes to curbing climate change. “When building new buildings in the future, more buildings should be made from secondary or, if possible, sustainable building materials and modular constructions. At the same time, when planning a building, attention should be paid to how it can be used efficiently and how its materials can ultimately be reused or recycled as completely as possible. This could reduce emissions by up to 40%,” said Sophia Kratzcircular economy expert at the environmental umbrella organization.
