– Voting for Nature Restoration Law is a responsible step!
Now we need enough votes from the other EU member states to pass the law in tomorrow’s EU Environment Council meeting and to make the task of saving nature a binding task for the coming years
Franz Maier, President of the Environmental Association
Vienna (OTS) – Today, Federal Minister Leonore Gewessler announced that she will vote for the renaturation law for Austria at tomorrow’s meeting of the EU Environment Council. “This is a wise and responsible decision by Federal Minister Gewessler! We are pleased that the numerous appeals and arguments have had an effect – at least since the Vienna state government’s decision on June 11, 2024 for the EU renaturation law, it has been clear that there is no longer a uniform position from the federal states and the way is clear to finally agree to important law. Europe can only preserve its prosperity if it curbs the consequences of the ecological crises and fights their causes – with its positive vote, Austria is now making a – possibly decisive – contribution to the urgently needed measures. Now we need enough votes from the other EU member states to pass the law in tomorrow’s EU Environment Council meeting and to make the task of saving nature a binding task for the coming years
“, says Franz MaierPresident of the environmental umbrella organization.
EU renaturation law strengthens the resilience of ecosystems
“The European law is urgently needed because it gives us the opportunity to build green infrastructure in and outside protected areas. We need this to preserve our natural resources such as soil, biodiversity and healthy food,” says happily Thomas Wrbka, President of the Nature Conservation Association, about this Austrian step. “As a central component of the EU Green Deal, the law provides important targets for the recovery of nature and offers small-scale agriculture in particular the opportunity to have their valuable services compensated for through voluntary participation in contractual nature conservation. In addition, the renaturation law can help to increase the resilience of ecosystems to natural disasters and thus help us, for example. B. to protect against future floods,” says Gábor WichmannManaging Director of BirdLife Austria.
