ELFI, the new feature film by Anita Lackenberger and Gerhard Mader, celebrated its successful cinema premiere in Innsbruck on September 13, 2024 and from here starts its cinema tour throughout Austria and will soon be shown in St. Pölten, Vienna and Linz.
With ELFI, after “VALS” and “A Wild Summer – The Wachau Saga”, the third feature film from the Tyrolean film company Production West is making it to the big screen across Austria. The director was Anita Lackenberger, a native of St. Pölten, who has set topics in St. Pölten in recent years with several films and documentaries. Most recently, for example, with “Romance! Schubert!”, “The country, the bishop and evil – Michael Memelauer”, land seizure 1021″ or “Mr. Morgenstern and his synagogue”.
With ELFI, Anita Lackenberger dedicated herself to a not very easy topic.
In the mid-1970s, Elfi falls in love with Sepp and Sepp with Elfi. Both “are different” and still manage their lives. But the decision about this life is made by others. Their simple desire – to get married, have children and be happy – does not fit into the thought patterns of a supposedly normal society.
Even today there are still numerous restrictions for people with disabilities
Josef Schoisengeyer, chairman of Club81, a club for disabled and non-disabled people that contributes to the reduction of human and structural barriers, knows from his own experience that even today people with disabilities find it difficult to participate in social, cultural and economic life. He reports on statistics on the income, living situation, education and work of people with disabilities: “These statistics make clear the poverty and exclusion that is often still prevalent. The numbers show fewer educational and employment opportunities. Only 8.4 percent of people with disabilities have an academic degree, while the figure for people without disabilities is around 20 percent. Only about half as many people with health restrictions have a high school diploma. In addition, around 28,000 people with disabilities in Austria are employed in day-care facilities – so-called workshops. Depending on the federal state, you receive between 35 and 100 euros in pocket money per month for your work and are insured against accidents. This means that a self-determined life is not possible for people who work in workshops.”
The actresses and actors
In addition to Elfi – played by newcomer Sofia Falzberger – and Sepp – alias Roland Silbernagl – the Weinviertler-born actor Johannes Schmid impresses in the role of Fritz, Elfi’s brother. Other roles include Kristina Sprenger, Gerti Drassl, Johannes Seilern, Sabine Muhar, Carmen Sanders-Gratl and Ute Heidorn.
