Linz (OTS) – Who doesn’t know this: the doorbell rings, you open it and you’re in the middle of a sales conversation. To ensure that consumers are protected after a hasty conclusion of a contract at the front door, the legislature has provided for a 14-day right of withdrawal. The AK consumer advocates helped a surprised older couple in a particularly brazen case – with success.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. A. contacted the AK OÖ consumer protection department. His 90-year-old parents received a visit from a salesman who advertised a blanket that could cure their father, who had dementia. While the salesman talked to the old couple, he promptly unpacked the blanket and spread it out on the couch. Mr. and Mrs. A. were so surprised that they signed a purchase agreement for the ceiling for 3,000 euros.
After consultation with the AK consumer advocates, the son declared his withdrawal from the contract on behalf of his parents using the AK sample letter and sent the blanket back to the company. The company did not respond to the resignation letter. But since no payments had been made yet, this wasn’t a big deal for consumers. In the event that the company had not accepted the withdrawal and had sued for the sum, the Upper Austrian Chamber of Labor would have supported those affected in court.
