Eating and celebrating without borders – culinary delights in Moravia and the Weinviertel

“Out and about with the neighbors” on Saturday, December 30, 2023 at 4:30 p.m. on ORF 2

St. Pölten (OTS) Holiday duck, roast pork and Striezel – the border region of the northern Weinviertel in Lower Austria and the southern part of Moravia in the Czech Republic boasts many gastronomic highlights. The latest production in the series “On the Road with the Neighbor”, this time from the ORF regional studio in Lower Austria, is dedicated to these culinary temptations. The documentary (design: Barbara Baldauf, cameraman: Andreas Kotzmann) shows a culinary journey through both countries, which were separated from each other by the Iron Curtain for decades but always connected.

Who doesn’t know the “Znojmo Gurkerl”, for example, whose tradition is now being continued by a vegetable producer in the Weinviertel. It is said in Moravia that a lot of money comes into the house by making lentil soup, and with poultry dishes on New Year’s Day, luck flies away. The typical Czech roast pork, with a modern twist, is served in the brewery inn in Znaim, the holiday duck in the inn in Unterretzbach. In a school in Znojmo, students prepare pastries that were discovered in old cookbooks as part of a project. And at the Windmühlheurigen in Retz you can find out what shouldn’t be missing from a real Heurigen snack.

In addition to the dishes, the film from the ORF Lower Austria regional studio highlights the traditions and customs in both countries around the turn of the year and shows sights on both sides of the border. Cellar alleys and seemingly endless cellar tubes in the Weinviertel are shown, as is a newly opened brewery in Znojmo city center.
