Early detection is crucial for combating the bark beetle in the forests. The Styrian company solid meter has developed a digital drone program with which infected trees can be localized. Around 2 million solid meter of damaged wood was recorded in Styria last year, a quarter of which is due to the bark beetle attack. The artificial intelligence proves to be extremely helpful in combating the beetles: each individual tree crown is recorded and analyzed on the drone or satellite images. Infrared images can be recognized even faster whether a tree is affected by the bark beetle. The bark beetle becomes active again in spring. Now in winter it is important to remove damaged trees from the forest so that neighboring trees are spared.
