Vienna (OTS) Anyone who goes to Carinthia is quickly taken in by the beauty of the landscape and the hospitality of the people: a seemingly happy people who always have a song on their lips. But some minor tones mix into the Carinthian song and take root in the Carinthian soul. Director Jennifer Rezny meets interesting people, some of them, during her filmic land survey made in 2023 for the ORF cultural documentary series “Weites Land” – which can be seen in “dokFilm” on Sunday, July 21, 2024, at 10:15 p.m. on ORF 2 and on ORF ON They are known beyond the region. The prominent protagonist is the ex-ski jumping professional as well as pilot and entrepreneur Thomas Morgenstern.

The now retired chef Sissy Sonnleitner was crowned with toques and rewarded with stars by the great gourmet bibles during her active time. Her recipe for success: In her inn in Kötschach-Mauthen, she merged local and Italian gastronomy to form the so-called Alpine-Adriatic cuisine. She is still fascinated by the fact that Carinthia is the intersection of Slavic, Romanesque and Germanic cultures. Despite this wealth, she detects a certain lack of self-confidence among her compatriots. This may be due to the historical view to the north: the wealthier rural society in Upper Austria has always appeared more self-confident.

Thomas Morgenstern states something similar: The three-time Olympic champion and multiple world champion in ski jumping ranks as a national hero. But above all, the beginnings were not easy. At a young age, he often felt dismissed in the ski association, which was dominated by self-confident Tyroleans. “You’re not one of us,” he often heard. Nevertheless, the former “ÖSV Eagle” remained a high flyer. With the helicopter, the now pilot and entrepreneur rises high above Lake Millstätter See.

Johann fulfills a heroic role in his private life, more precisely that of the henpecked hero – and does so with dedication and passion. Because his wife Christine keeps the reins tight. The two run a campsite and restaurant at Lake Faaker See, where summer is still the same as it was back then. October 11, 2008 was also a “J. F. Kennedy moment” for Johann: everyone who had outgrown the nursery at that time still knows where the news of Jörg Haider’s death reached them. Johann developed a friendship with the legendary and controversial state governor. However, he rejects the conspiracy theories surrounding his car accident.

Jörg Haider is seen by many as a divisive factor in society, especially by members of the Slovenian minority. The bank employee Paul wishes that politicians would finally value the Slovenian language more and that he would no longer have to ask for every Slovenian word because that would be offensive. And social worker Marko speaks of a conflict that continues to have an impact. Nevertheless, there are dialect expressions beyond all language boundaries. “Tschentschen” means something like whining, but unlike the Viennese grumbling that is loudly trumpeted to the world, it is more inward-looking – and thus refers to the Carinthian mentality.

A German organist playing the Danube Waltz in a Klagenfurt church – that is also featured in this edition of “Weites Land”. In the first years of his immigration, Martin quickly decided: We don’t need a German to explain to us how to do things properly here. He loves the musicality of the people in his new home: They were born to be the first to sing a Carinthian song.

For 64 years, Hermine Wiegele has been standing in her bakery in Gailtaler Nötsch almost every day early in the morning. If there’s one thing on the 84-year-old’s mind, it’s the thought of having to retire. In addition to bread, art is an essential food for her. The Wiegelehaus also houses the Museum of the Nötscher Kreis, which included important artists such as Franz Wiegele, Sebastian Isepp, Anton Kohlig and Anton Mahringer. Despite offers from relatives to go abroad, Hermione never allowed herself to be uprooted: “I would die of thirst in a foreign country.”
