Vienna (OTS) – Hanno Settele delves into a world that has been thought to have passed away for many centuries: witchcraft. The online market for healing stones, card readings and amulets is booming. The WitchTok trend proves that many young people are currently interested in magic and esotericism. You can find millions of posts on the video platform TikTok under this hashtag. Is the trend a sign of the triumph of scientific skepticism and escapism or is it rather self-care and feminism in a new, old guise? Hanno Settele investigates this question in “Doc 1:
Witches: Hanno Totally Enchanted” on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at 8:15 p.m. on ORF 1.
More about the content:
Hanno Settele’s visits to the witch school and to witches’ homes make it clear that the phenomenon is not limited to the Internet. Here people do oracles, smoke and commute. Traditional and modern witches introduce him to secrets, give him cards and show him how witches live today. And finally he learns unexpected things from the witches Regina Rapp, Romana Pfleger and Margit Böhmer – including about his possible future as ORF general director. Hanno Settele delves into the dark sides and myths, talks to consumer advocate Barbara Bauer and talks to Johannes Sinabell from the Archdiocese of Vienna about whether the weakening church in Austria should be afraid of today’s witchcraft. He speaks to the head of the Federal Office for Sect Questions, Ulrike Schiesser, and the cultural scientist Johanna Braun. At the Riegersburg, Hanno Settele’s historical image of a witch is turned on its head by Sabine Theni.
